KUALA TERENGGANU (NST): The news has turned from bad to worse for 30 businessmen who last month claimed they had lost large sums of money in seeking to be dealers for an internet service company despite promised refunds by the company.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), in a statement to the New Straits Times, said the company’s licence had expired in October 2008.

“To date, no new licence has been registered under the name of the company in question.

“If members of the public are in doubt about a company’s licensing status under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 or have complaints that a company may have contravened the act, they are advised to contact MCMC,” the statement stated.

Last month, the dealers, from various parts of the country, said they had spent an average of RM100,000 in membership fees, deposits for software or hardware products as well as costs to set up offices to be part of the company, which has yet to commence operations.

The deposits for membership fees and software and hardware alone came up to RM65,000.

Launched in January last year, the company was to supply portable Internet protocol, Voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and broadband services.

The dealers are now in the dark as they could not get in touch with the company.

Some of the cheques that were sent to them as reimbursements, have bounced.

One of the dealers claimed he had written to the company’s chief executive officer in September saying that he wanted to pull out of the business venture and the latter had agreed to reimburse them in a month.

However, in October, they were told that the refunds would be disbursed only in November.

Since then, the office in Kelana Jaya had closed and the chief executive officer could not be contacted.
