KUALA TERENGGANU, May 14 (Bernama) — The police detained five men and confiscated 125 motorcycles in a 12-day operation from May 2 against illegal racing here.

“The men are aged between 17 and 20 years, and four of them were caught red-handed for reckless riding,” Kuala Terengganu acting police chief, Supt Abd Halim Ishak, told reporters Thursday.

A total of 1,465 motorcycles were inspected and 1,540 motorcyclists and pillion riders were screened, he added.

Abd Halim said the single biggest offence was riding without a licence, of which there were 173 cases, followed by riding without wearing helmets properly (138 cases), riding motorcycles without rear-view mirrors (84) and for number plate offences (73).

Fifty-five summonses were issued to those who did not have the “P” and “L” stickers, 27 for those who did not have the road tax disc, eight who were underaged, six who did not have insurance coverage and 103 for other offences.

Abd Halim said the police would continue to conduct similar operations indefinitely in line with the government’s desire to wipe out illegal racing.

Hence, he called on parents to cooperate by keeping an eye on their children’s daily activities, especially during the school holidays next month.

Anyone else who has information on illegal motorcycle racing can contact the police at 09-631 2222, he said.
