State rep, friend held over kickback

KUALA LUMPUR (NST): A Barisan Nasional assemblyman was arrested for alleged graft while having breakfast at a hotel in Terengganu yesterday.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission nabbed the 42-year-old assemblyman and his 45-year-old friend at the hotel in Kijal at 9.20am.

It was alleged they had asked a company executive to meet them at the hotel to discuss a monthly kickback amounting to 13 per cent of the contract given to the company for 24 months.

Some RM30,000 is believed to have changed hands so far.

Both had been remanded to assist in the MACC’s investigation. Attempts to contact theassemblyman were futile.
When the New Straits Times called his home in Kemasik, his sister said that he had returned home at noon but left later.

She said she had not heard from him since.

However, MACC sources said the assemblyman and the other man were taken to its headquarters in Putrajaya straight from the hotel.

He confirmed that they were arrested by MACC officers from its headquarters and not from the Terengganu branch.

The source said the MACC could detain the assemblyman for 48 hours, after which it would have to apply for a remand order for further detention of a maximum of 14 days.

Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said said the state government would not interfere in the investigation.
