KUALA TERENGGANU: The state government will appoint a consultant from Britain to determine the cause of the roof collapse at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium.

Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said said the government had earlier rescinded the decision to set up it own investigative team to avoid any clash in the scope of probe initiated by a team set up by the Federal Government.

However, after taking into account the necessity of having an independent investigation panel apart from the federal team, the state government decided to appoint a reliable firm.

“The British consultant that we are close to appointing also has a regional office in Kuala Lumpur,” Ahmad told reporters here yesterday.

On June 6, the roof of the east wing of the RM292mil stadium in Gong Badak collapsed.

Ahmad said the British firm would submit the investigation papers to the state government while the federal team would hand its report to the Cabinet.

He added that the consultant would be given three months to conduct the probe.

KUALA TERENGGANU (The Star): A robbery suspect who tried to “rescue” his partner-in-crime who was detained by the police ended up being shot.

The 35-year-old parang-wielding man was shot in the left thigh on Thursday evening after he tried to attack two plainclothes detectives who had apprehended a 27-year-old suspect who was with him in Kampung Teluk Pasu, Manir, near here.

The detainee was on the wanted list for a series of break-ins in Gong Badak and Tok Jembal.

State deputy CID chief Supt K. Manoharan said as the policemen waited for a patrol car to take the younger suspect to the police headquarters, his accomplice who had run off, re-appeared armed with the parang to save his friend.

The policemen fired a warning shot but it did not deter the man. Another shot was fired, hitting the man in the thigh.

The assailant then tried to escape on one of the detectives’ motorcycles but was detained after a short chase.

Police have remanded the man to facilitate investigations under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

He was sent for treatment to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital where doctors removed the bullet from his thigh early yesterday morning.

It is learnt that he was also on the police wanted list for snatch thefts and break-ins.

In a separate development, a traffic policeman from the Dungun police headquarters suffered serious injuries after he was mowed down by an illegal car racer at the 79.6th kilometre of the Kuala Terengganu-Dungun road yesterday.

Korporal Azli Husin, 44, was manning a roadblock when the car rammed into him at high speed, dragging him several metres.

The policeman’s superior, Sarjan Abdul Hakim Samingan, said the 27-year-old driver was detained on the spot in the 1pm incident.

Korporal Azli who was initially treated at Dungun Hospital, was rushed to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital after his situation worsened.

He was reported to be in a coma at the hospital’s intensive care unit.

KUALA TERENGGANU (NST): The state Forestry Department is on the hunt for a local form of inoculation to speed up “gaharu” production and its industry here.

Inoculation of the agarwood or “karas” tree helps accelerate the process of infection which in turn leads to better yield of the aromatic resin. Traditionally, tappers slash the tree for it to be infected.

It is estimated that a “karas” tree takes between 10 and 15 years to produce “gaharu”, but with inoculation, it takes only between two and three years.

State Forestry Department director Nor Akhirruddin Mahmud said the current vaccines used were costly as they were imported from the United States and Thailand, and could only be used selectively.

This has slowed the production of “gaharu”, which is mainly used in the perfume trade. Two years ago, the price ranged between RM8,000 and RM10,000 a kilogramme.
While the economic value of an adult tree is still being researched here, on average, it can yield up to RM18,000 a kg after harvesting in Thailand and Indonesia.

The New Straits Times reported in 2007 that the state is sitting on a goldmine, because in four years’ time, it stands to earn more than RM500 million in revenue from a 47ha site at the Merchang forestry station holding 40,000 seedlings.

It is also used medicinally as a remedy for nervous disorders such as neurosis, obsessive behaviour and exhaustion.

“Despite the state’s huge potential to become a hub for gaharu production, we are still lagging behind other countries like Thailand and Singapore as we have overlooked its economic value.

“But this does not mean we cannot be part of the industry. That is why we want to come up with a local inoculation which could encourage more participants in the industry,” he told the NST recently.

Currently, the department is working closely with the Malaysian Nuclear Institution for a local substance but is open to other solutions. Nor Akhirruddin said the department was hoping to come up with its own form of vaccine in the next two years.

The department was also trying to encourage people to grow agarwood.

KUALA TERENGGANU (NST): The state government will not hesitate to repossess the e-book computers of students found misusing them.

The stern warning came from state Education, Higher Learning, Science, Technology and Human Resources Committee chairman Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman following five reports of students downloading songs as well as unsavoury material to their computer notebooks.

Ahmad said teachers and executive information officers (EIOs) would monitor the students. EIOs are responsible for problems related to the e-books.

The state, he said, would withhold the laptops from the students for a specific period and would look into methods to punish the repeat offenders.

“We did expect such problems to crop up when we distributed the e-books.
“Although the situation is not critical with only five cases among the over 12,000 e-books distributed to date, we want to nip the trend in the bud.

“We are confident of overcoming this problem,” he said yesterday.

Ahmad was speaking to reporters after receiving a cheque for RM30,000 from HSBC Amanah Takaful (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd for the “Didik UPSR” programme at Wisma Darul Iman.

The e-book programme, reputed to be the first of its kind in the country, is aimed at giving information and communication technology exposure to students as well as to lighten their schoolbags.

The Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka provides the digital textbooks installed in the laptops.

The 1.1kg e-book is installed with a complete school syllabus and religious study programs such as Muqaddam and Quran.

Each laptop is powered by an Intel Atom processor and 512MB of RAM and a 4GB hard disk.

It is sold to the state government at RM999 each, inclusive of the digital textbooks and a one-year warranty.

Ahmad said there were 335 vacancies for EIOs. Currently the state has 165 such officers and hopes to have 500 by the year-end.
