KUALA TERENGGANU (NST): Roses came to the rescue of Pas Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election candidate Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut when meeting voters in Kampung Cina recently.
Admittedly nervous about meeting the women there to introduce himself, Wahid was wondering what to do as he did not want to shake hands with the fairer sex.
He did the next best thing. He said it with roses.
“At first I was not so sure about greting the women in Kampung Cina, but luckily someone handed me a bouquet of roses.
“So every time the women held out their hand, I handed them the flowers.
“It really helped me. I am considering using flowers again, but maybe not roses. They are expensive. Next time around, it might be oranges,” he told the New Straits Times.
Wahid said the meet-the- people session went well as he observed the Chinese community here had less reservations towards a Pas candidate. Some even remembered him campaigning in the constituency many years ago.
In 1986, Wahid lost to Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Tok Teng Sai, a former state MCA councillor for the Bandar state seat.
This time round he will be facing candidate, Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh.
Wahid was accompanied by Seputeh MP Teresa Kok.
An observer noted that the women were very happy to receive the flowers.
