KUALA TERENGGANU: Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) declared a one-day holiday after its lecture halls and offices were inundated by floods, while an 11-year-old girl became the fourth flood victim in Kelantan.
In Terengganu, floodwaters reached almost 0.5m after incessant rain since Sunday night, causing main roads leading to UMT to be closed to light vehicles.
The university’s vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Sulaiman Md Yasin said 1,200 staff members and students were unable to get to their offices and lecture halls with the knee-level waters.
“We declared today (Monday) a holiday and will monitor the situation tomorrow — if it improves then we will resume,” he said when contacted on Monday.
Several students who turned up for lectures were told to return to their hostels until further notice.
A check at the university at about 5pm showed that the floodwaters were gradually receding.
